The HWSETA hereby invites constituent and eligible health and welfare organisations/companies, sector statutory bodies, sector associations, universities, TVET Colleges (including public and private nursing colleges), community colleges, health and social development departments and HWSETA partners with signed MOUs to apply for discretionary grant funding. This grant is intended to meet the HWSETA sector needs as set out in the sector skills plan, strategic plan, workplace skills plans and priorities outlined in the National Development Plan.
The discretionary grant is intended for programmes and projects that improve the supply of qualified and competent people in sector-priority occupations and interventions, occupational shortages (hard-to-fill-vacancies) and skills gaps (top-up or critical skills) and economic reconstruction and recovery plan.
In this window, the HWSETA will be allocating discretionary grants for the following learning programmes and the maximum amounts indicated.

28th June 2025I am a former HWSETA bursary recipient. I received the bursary through my tertiary late last year in my final year. So I had to pay accommodation costs cash because my residence was going through a sale so they wanted all accounts to be finalized before the sale. The second part of bursary only came through in February this year. I guess my question is can I get a refund to me from my tertiary institution as I have a due to me in my student accounts?

Kindy note that HWSETA should advertise towards the end of the year till beginning of the following year. however, please note that HWSETA does not advertise funding directly to the beneficiaries or students. HWSETA administer funded programmes through HWSETA registered Employers, public TVET colleges and public universities.

Kindly be informed that HWSETA does not recruit students for any funded programmes. HWSETA advertises funding on an annual basis to HWSETA-registered public and private Employers; the Department of Health and Social Development, Private hospitals, and administers partnerships with TVET Colleges and Public Universities in South Africa. The qualification / Learning Programme pursued should fall within the scope of the health and social development sector. Kindly be informed that HWSETA advertised funding from December 2024 until 14 March 2025.
HWSETA should advertise again around the same period for the next financial year.
Please note that once the Employers, TVET Colleges, and Universities are approved for funding, they recruit beneficiaries. The communication and coordination are done through the Employers, Public Universities, and Public TVET Colleges.
