13th February 2026The evolution of the NPO sector: training options and employability
Training in and around the NPO sector varies, but it typically includes a mix of formal education, workplace learning, and on-the-job experience.
Formal training & academic pathways
Universities and colleges increasingly offer courses and degrees in nonprofit management, humanitarian action, corporate social investment (CSI), governance, and related fields — reflecting the sector’s growing complexity.
Vocational and workplace training
Sector education and training authorities (SETAs) and national skills strategies (e.g., in South Africa) create frameworks for workplace skills development and employability, which NPO workers and volunteers can access.
Workshops, boot camps, and short courses — often provided through partnerships with higher education, professional bodies, or civil society networks — build competencies like project management, financial oversight, and monitoring & evaluation.
